Yes,he aimed higher than his capacity,the capacity of doing kind things.He tried,as it were,to negotiate with his conscience but he doomed himself to failure.He couldn't be involved in that crime.Maybe he was a man of immense mental grasp,maybe he was too naive in order to get much money in an easy way.Hard to say.But you see he couldn't be against God and couldn't kill a man.Naive and kind people are always afraid of God,of punishment,coming from heaven.
Maybe his navity doomed him to frustration.But in any way he kept his purity though only for himself.So his girl-friend was astonished.Why hadn't he killed her father?He might kill him and just take the money he had kept in in the safe.But he couldn't.He couldn't do that because his love and respect to his own parents were more deeper that those of his girl-friend's.And he couldn't understand her like a kind man can't understand a cruel one.And like God can't understand devil,as it were,the devil's ambition which always exceeds his conscience.
The devil's compliments work magic.He can impose to do one of the seven deadly sins easily.But it doesn't work on kind people who do everything according to their conscience.
And maybe God is our own conscience.Who knows?
